Between 1968-71, Hazlewood not only released his finest solo work, but produced numerous artists on LHI. Now, for Record Store Day 2012, we are kicking off our excavation of the Lee Hazlewood archives with this anthology, Singles, Nudes & Backsides, collecting the best of Lee’s solo songs and duets from his LHI (Lee Hazlewood Industries) imprint.Īs a true legend of the great American songbook and a rebellious pioneer who left behind a lengthy trail of echo laden pop masterpieces, Lee’s influence continues to reverberate today. Though he’s perhaps best known for his work with Nancy Sinatra (including writing mega-hit “These Boots Are Made For Walking”), Hazlewood did stunning work away from that particular glamour queen and found latter day champions in Beck, Sonic Youth, and Jarvis Cocker. With his handlebar moustache and booming baritone, Lee Hazlewood was one of the defining stars of the late ‘60s. As Sinatra's Columbia years are well-covered by compilations, this isn't a good introduction, and with only a few exceptions, the alternate takes hardly make it worthwhile for casual fans as well.Lee Hazlewood – The LHI Years: Singles, Nudes, And Backsides | 2xLP | What’s Inside? from Light In The Attic Records on Vimeo. "Mam'selle" is solid as well, though "One for My Baby (And One More for the Road)" is a very straightforward reading, even to a fault, making it obvious why this version wasn't chosen for (original) release. Even more than usual, Sinatra is laid-back and relaxed on the alternates, easing his way through "The Coffee Song" in a similar manner to that he'd perfect during the '50s and '60s. with eight alternate takes, all previously unreleased and all of them an intriguing prospect for fans. Including the same number of tracks as the label's 16 Most Requested Songs from 1992, this one alternates eight of Sinatra's Columbia-era classics - "Saturday Night (Is the Loneliest Night of the Week)," "All of Me," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Day By Day," etc. The Essential Frank Sinatra: The Columbia Years is half greatest-hits wrap-up and half rarities compilation, a prospect that will likely frustrate either set of record-buyers (collectors and neophytes) who purchase it. |
